OUR
History
The Northwest Flyers Track Club was started in 1987 to help girls in Northwest Houston participate in youth track & field. Fred Newhouse, a US Olympic gold medalist in track, was one of the primary organizers of the club. The early success of the club led to expanding the membership to both boys and girls.
The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a youth (ages 6 -18) track organization, affiliated with USA Track & Field (USATF) and local USATF Gulf Association that provides a full program of sanctioned “track” events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance, relays and sanctioned “field” events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, shot put and javelin. The club averages about 250 athletes per season and is slightly smaller than some Houston based clubs. However, bigger is not always better and our size allows coaches to give athletes individual instruction and guidance. The leadership fosters teamwork, mutual respect, encouragement, and a fun family atmosphere. Our mission is to foster the development of youth track & field in Houston and surrounding areas and to provide long-term growth opportunities to athletes through their association with the sport.
Our youth development philosophy is balanced and not overly obsessed with winning. However, the achievements of the club are impressive, with more than one-third of our athletes qualifying for the Texas State Championships and the National Junior Olympics Championships. More importantly, over 95% of our athletes have gone on to college and many have received academic and/or athletic scholarships. We are a member of the “Win With Integrity Champion” program, a partnership between USATF and the American College of Sports Medicine. “Win With Integrity” brings elite track & field athletes and school-aged kids together to promote healthy lifestyles, keeping active, and living with integrity through the sport of track & field.
The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt and non-profit organization. We offer some hardship scholarships to eligible youth who wish to participate in the program.
