Saturday, the Northwest Flyers Track Club hosted it's annual home meet at Rice Stadium with around 35 different youth track clubs from across the state of Texas.
The all day meet brought in over 2,500 youth athletes ranging from ages 8 to 18 and over 5,000 fans in attendance.
"Overall, we had a great meet with great track performances, and a spirited crowd cheering remarkably loud all day," meet director Pal Roach said. Roach is also one of the head coaches of the Flyers club.
Roach said the meet was originally schedule at Klein stadium but was moved to Rice Stadium due to ongoing construction.
"Rice University offered a wonderful opportunity for youth athletes to compete at a premier college track facility which just last week hosted the Conference USA Outdoor College Track & Field Championships." Roach said.
Through the day, the Flyers as a team obtained 12 gold medals. Ten individual and two relay competitions including the 9-10-year-olds boys 4x400 relay. One of the Flyers, Tori Mack, won two medals in the shot put and discus in the 17-18 year old women's division.
Roach said the Flyers will be in action this weekend at a meet at Butler Stadium. Then later in June, they will compete in the Houston area championship June 24-25, followed by a state-wide championship in Arlington July 5-9, then the U.S. Olympic Junior National Championship July 26-August 1st held in Wichita, Kan.
Roach said that in order to qualify for the National Championship in Wichita, an athlete must place in the top 5 in their event at the state-wide championship. But Roach was confident that it they will happen.
"We think we will qualify 50 or more Northwest Flyers athletes to the Junior Olympics National Championship in Wichita," Roach said.
Northwest Flyers Track Club Hosts its 25th Anniversary Meet at Klein Memorial Stadium on May 18-19
May 1, 2012 Houston, TX -- The Northwest Flyers, a USA Track and Field (USATF) affiliate, kicks off the 2012 youth club track season by hosting its track meet on May 18-19 at Klein Memorial Stadium. Sanctioned by USATF, the track meet is open to all youth between the ages of 6 and 18. Track clubs as well as unattached athletes are welcomed; however a USATF membership card is required to compete. The entry fee is $5 for athletes and $5 for spectators. The meet will offer all traditional track & field events. The running events will include hurdles, sprints, middle distance, distance and relays. Field events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, javelin, shot put and discus will also be competed.
Meet director Tony Runnels commented, “Last year’s Flyers team qualified fifty-seven (57) athletes to the US Junior Olympics in Wichita, KS. Although all those kids are back with us, Houston is loaded with track talent … it’s our first big test to advance our athletes to this year’s Junior Olympics in Baltimore, MD”.
The meet planners are expecting over 2500 athletes from the Gulf Coast region of Texas, from beginners to elite, including several youth track national record holders and Texas high school track meet standouts.
Runnels added “the Flyers meet is the largest regular season (pre-lim) youth track meet in the state, that’s why we had to move to a 10,000 seat facility to accommodate the growth”.
The meet will be held on Friday May 18 and Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Klein Memorial Stadium, 16715 Stuebner-Airline, Klein, TX 77379. Events start at 5:00pm on Friday and at 8:30am on Saturday.
The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization founded in 1987 by Fred Newhouse, a US Olympic gold medallist in track & field. The club has approximately 275 members, boys and girls, from ages 6 to 18.
